Accessibility of our online services

This website and its sub-domains are run by York Learning. We want as many people as possible to be able to use our websites, so our online services are designed to be used by as many people as possible. The text should be clear and simple to understand, and you should be able to:

  • zoom in up to 300% without problems
  • navigate most of our website using just a keyboard
  • use most of our website with screen reader software

Our online services are partially compliant with the latest Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, known as ‘WCAG 2.1 AA’.

Parts of our online services are not fully accessible. For example:

  • some pages and document attachments are not clearly written
  • some pages have inappropriate colour contrast
  • some headings are not consistent
  • some images do not have appropriate alternative text
  • some buttons are not correctly identified
  • many documents in Portable Document Format (PDF) are not accessible
  • The maps on our venues and contact us pages may not be fully accessible

Requesting information in an accessible format

If you need information in a different format, such as an accessible PDF, large print, braille or verbally, email york.learning@york.gov.uk and tell us:

  • the location of the information (copy and paste the URL/address from your browser address bar)
  • your name and email address (so we can respond)
  • the format you need (for example, audio CD, braille, British Sign Language (BSL), large print, accessible PDF)

We will respond to your request as soon as we are able, within 5 working days.

York Learning is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

Online services which are exempt from accessibility standards

The accessibility regulations do not require us to ‘fix’ existing documents if they were published before 23 September 2018 (if they’re not essential to providing services), neither are we required to amend PDFs which are part of heritage collections or scanned manuscripts; email us about requesting services in an accessible format.

Pre-recorded audio and videos published before 23 September 2020 are exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations and may not all have captions.

Maps are exempt from accessibility regulations, but we’re working to provide essential information in accessible ways; email us about requesting services in an accessible format.

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services.

Where our assessments have determined that it would be disproportionate burden to apply fixes to make part of online services accessible, we are working to make information more accessible within our normal update schedule.

Ongoing improvements for increased accessibility

We’re committed to being a fair and inclusive service, and we’re passionate about providing accessible services, ensuring they’re properly designed and coded, so more people can use them more easily, regardless of their hardware, software, language, location, or ability.

Our online services are currently being (and will continue to be) reviewed for compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA.
