In the case of snow, flooding or other adverse weather conditions, it may be necessary to cancel classes.  Whilst every effort will be made to keep classes open, there may be occasions when the risk of harm to learners or tutors travelling to classes would mean that cancelling classes would be the sensible option.

The decision to close classes will be made by a senior manager. This decision will be based on access to venues, the availability of public transport and the risk of harm to staff and learners getting to, and returning from, classes.

Any decision to close classes will be made as soon as possible with a target of making a decision before 4pm.

Should the decision be taken to close a class we will:

  • Put a message on our central telephone line 01904 554277
  • E-mail the class tutor
  • E-mail all students (where an email address is available)

If your course is based in a school or library, the Council’s website york.gov.uk usually has up-to-date information about school closures

Centre staff and tutors will endeavour to text students individually. However, this isn’t always practical, especially with widespread closure or last minute closure of venues.

Please note – It is up to individual staff and learners to be proactive in finding out about their class and checking the above websites/phone number regularly for updates.

As adverse weather conditions are most likely to affect classes between January and March, the following leaflets will be distributed in registers to be given out in classes in January (or at other times if adverse weather is forecast)
